TIRASPOL, Transnistria — In a region often associated with political tension and military control, something profound and unexpected is taking root: a Christian revival. Despite the heavy presence of Russian troops and the constant scrutiny of authorities, believers say that faith is spreading — and lives are changing, CBN says.
From Danger to Dedication
In the year 2000, Yuriy Semenyuk — with his wife and three children — moved from Ukraine to the breakaway region of Transnistria. He felt a calling: “God told me, ‘Yuriy, I need you in one place, that name is Transnistria’.”
Those early years were far from easy. Semenyuk faced danger not only from official agents — police, KGB — but from gangsters. On more than one occasion, his life and the safety of his children were threatened. At one point, he was even kidnapped, yet somehow escaped.
Despite the danger, Semenyuk and his family pressed on. “Some of the gangsters became Christian … their wives became evangelical,” he recalled. As his message spread, opposition was fierce — but so was the steadfastness of those who believed.
A Flourishing Church at the Heart of Tiraspol
Today, the congregation led by Semenyuk — Church of Christ Savior — is reportedly the largest in Transnistria. Every Sunday the sanctuary fills with people, many hearing the gospel for the very first time.
The church doesn’t confine its work to Sunday worship. Baptisms are held regularly, youth programmes run during the week, and evangelistic rallies take place in Tiraspol and nearby cities.
There are also testimonies of what members describe as miracles: reports of healed illnesses, restored vision, even deafness reversed. “I believe all this power is in the gospel … God equips us … to preach the gospel and make disciples,” Semenyuk says.
More Than Spiritual Revival: Social Impact Through Youth and Aid
Faith and evangelism at Church of Christ Savior are coupled with practical outreach. Through their partnership with Orphan’s Promise, the church runs a “School of Life” project: free classes in computer skills, sewing, photography, English, math — and discipleship via the children’s program Superbook.
Faith Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty
Transnistria is a breakaway territory, unrecognized internationally, economically and militarily dependent on Russia — with around 2,000 Russian troops stationed there.
Given recent regional instability and the ongoing conflict affecting neighbouring Ukraine, many residents live with a looming fear of war. Yet, Semenyuk remains unwavering. “War or no war… nothing changes. We have the same calling all the time,” he declares.
For him and many others, this revival is more than numbers — it’s faith thriving under pressure, and a testimony that hope and transformation can rise even in dark places.
