In Iran four Christians have recently been sentenced to prison. Two of them have been sentenced to 10 years in prison, the other two have been sentenced to six years in prison. The Spanish Evangelical Alliance (AEE) has taken action by sending a letter to the Iranian embassy in Spain regarding this case, Evangelical Focus reports.

In the letter the AEE states that they are “deeply shocked by this news”, because they believe that “freedom of religion or belief is very important”. They defend the Iranian Christians by stating: “These people were simply exercising their freedom of thought, conscience and religion, as well as their freedom of expression, as defined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ratified by their country”.

Fundamental rights
In the letter the AEE also expresses their concern for all Christians in Iran. “If Christians cannot meet in their homes, where should they meet to worship?” Furthermore they write that they know there are many Christians in Iran and they ask the Iranian ambassador if Christians are safe when they visit a church to worship.

The AEE calls for the charges against the four Iranian Christians to be revoked and for their release. On the part of the Iranian government, that would be a sign of respect for fundamental rights, they state.
