24 years ago translators began translating the Bible into the Ossetian language. Before they started the project, the translators had a special training. Specialists call the translation that has resulted from the work, unique, Inlight.news reports.

In 1998, a group of Ossetians began translating the Bible into modern literary language. The work aroused great interest in the Christian communities of Ossetia, but it soon became clear that it would be difficult for translators to complete the task without additional knowledge and resources.

In December of 1998, the Russian Bible Society (RBO) offered to help. Soon after, in the beginning of 1999, they started recruiting additional translators for the project. Special courses were organized to teach them the Hebrew language and the basics of biblical translation. Both Russian and foreign world-class biblical scholars were invited as teachers.

In 2002, the St. Petersburg branch of the RBO began translating the Bible into the Ossetian language. The translation of the New Testament happened at the Bible Translation Institute. The design of the Bible in the Ossetian language will use the Alanian cross and national ornament, and the publication will be dedicated to the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the baptism of Alania.
