The Russian news website ria.ru reports that scientists from Petrozavodsk State University discovered settlements in Russia that went underwater because of a large-scale rise in sea level that happened over 6000 years ago.

Two settlements were discovered by scientists at the Petrozavodsk State University in Karelia. They said that these settlements had gone underwater because of the large-scale rise in sea levels more than 6000 years ago. The scientists think that these settlements were left behind because of the flood. They base this on household items that were found underneath a layer of sea sand.
In 1930, Soviet archaeologists had already found a settlement that was also covered with sea sand, but then they assumed this was the result of local flooding. However, now they have found more, which points towards a much larger scale of flooding. One of the scientists, Alexander Zhulnikov, adds that the nature of the flood is still unclear. He states that the water was arriving rapidly. The scientists want to do further research to establish the scale of the flood.
